***Rabies Alert*** Erie County Cat Tests Positive for Rabies
Location – Edinboro Plank Road, Waterford, Washington Township, Erie County
Summary –A man noticed his barn cat was not feeling well and took it to the vet on a Tuesday. On Saturday the cat began to show signs of paralysis in its legs. The man took the cat back to the vet on Thursday for euthanasia. The cat was submitted to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory where it tested positive for rabies.
Exposure –No domestic animals were exposed to the cat. Two people were exposed and are receiving post exposure treatment.
Rabies Law – Pennsylvania law requires all dogs and non-feral cats three months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. Booster vaccinations must be administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity. Failure to comply with the law may result in a fine of up to $300.
